The Three Tassels

I began attending the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN while still in high school, and received my B.A. in Creative Writing and Music, after being awarded both music and academic scholarships.

Shortly before I graduated, I went to pick up my cap and gown. I expected to receive both pink and white tassels for my creative writing and music degrees, but was surprised when I was incorrectly given a light blue tassel for education instead. I ended up walking with blue and pink tassels, and was finally given my white tassel after graduation.

It seems like a predictive mistake as I have equally used all three fields of study throughout my career. I have used my music degree to perform in many notable venues such as the Space Needle and Meydenbauer Center Theatre in both solo and chamber concerts, but I have combined that with education to create classes, camps and events at Music Works Northwest and through Seattle Parks and Rec. I have used my creative writing degree to publish poetry and short stories, but have also used it in my script writing for educational programs such as my recent Parent Map Live event.

Though I often wear three hats (with three different tassels), I primarily see myself as a storyteller. I love finding solutions through the creative power of story, and hope to inspire a love of learning and passion for creativity in my community.
